TADAO ANDO-CHURCH ON THE WATER

The chruch on the water is one of the most representative pieces of Tadao Ando’s style. It was built between 1985 and 1988, in Hokkaido, Japan.

The church is located near Tomamu, in the island of Hokkaido, in northern Japan. It is a small chapel that belongs to the Alpha Resort hotel, opposed to the hotel and separated by an L-shaped wall, Ando establishes a sacred enclosure isolated from the mundane and focusing all the attention on a grove of beech trees located in front of the temple in which a stream also runs.

Many of Tadao Ando’s works base their richness on the building’s relationship with nature. The Church on water is one of his most successful achievements in which he uses nature as an element involved in design. In it, Ando tries to create a microcosm in which he combines concepts of the profane and the sacred, the artificial and the natural, the closed and the exposed.
